Welcome to our Art Department

At Cheney School we aim to inspire all students to develop their creative skills and thinking. At KS3, students study a broad range of contemporary and historical artists and artworks, through practical investigations, discussion and written work. We aim to introduce all students to drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, ceramic and sculpture over the two years. This year, students in Year 7 will begin by exploring cakes, confectionery and advertising in our “Consumer Culture” project. Year 8 are rethinking museum collections through the Cabinet of Curiosities and our Year 9 students are investigating The Bigger Picture, which explores the impact of trade, migration and colonial power on the art world.

KEY STAGE 4

We currently run the Edexcel Fine Art GCSE. This is an exciting qualification for all students entering Key Stage 4, building on practical skills taught at Key Stage 3. Students have the opportunity to develop independent projects and portfolios under the titles “Headlines” and “Systems and Revolution”. We believe that all students should have personal choice when investigating their chosen theme in Art, and structure our lessons to accommodate this and promote independence and imagination. We have a particular focus on developing and articulating ideas, as well as expressing these through visual language. All students have the opportunity to further develop their skills in drawing, painting, multiple printmaking techniques, sculpture and ceramics, art textiles, mixed media and surface work.

KEY STAGE 5

We offer students the Edexcel A Level Art & Design course with endorsements in Fine Art and Photography. These courses offer personal portfolio based development which is supported by rigorous contextual research and self evaluation. A Level students at Cheney all have the opportunity to use our Sixth Form studio space for independent work and group crits.
