Lessons In History for 6th Formers

Dr Felicity Heal (Jesus College) and Dr James McDougall (Trinity College) came to Cheney on last week to talk to Year Twelve and Thirteen about Popular Religion in Elizabeth England, and the Arab Spring respectively.  There were very interesting parallels and contrasts between the way public opinion evolved in England after the Reformation and changes in public opinion in the Arab world before and after 2011.  Dr McDougall showed how different the experience of the Arab spring had been across different countries, and why, while Dr Heal explored the difficulties historians have in evaluating evidence about what people were really thinking in a society where conformity was expected.  Both speakers were fascinating and there were many questions.  We are very grateful to Dr Steve Gunn (Merton College), Dr Vivienne Larminie, and the Oxford Branch of the Historical Association for arranging these talks.
