Our mixed Sixth Form is a well-developed and diverse community, offering exciting and demanding experiences that provide important steps in the process of preparing for University and future employment. Each year we welcome approximately 150 students into Year 12 to pursue an engaging curriculum, with a variety of Advanced Level courses and Level 3 BTECs; an Extended Curriculum of Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and Community Volunteering; and the Extended Project Qualification. Sixth Form is a time for developing independence, gaining responsibility, embracing freedom and broadening personal development in a challenging and supportive environment. As the accepted role models for the lower school, it is also important for our students to engage in a range of extracurricular activities to broaden their experience. Our students are our ambassadors.
In the Sixth Form, you will experience a variety of exciting opportunities to challenge yourself and develop as an individual, as well as intellectually. In Year 12, you will move into a new tutor group, with a dedicated and specialist Sixth Form tutor. Your tutor continues to provide valuable guidance and mentoring, and, with the support of the Sixth Form and Careers Advisor, gives advice on careers, work experience and the process of applying to Higher Education.
We pride ourselves on offering our students choice. To that end, we offer two types of qualification: traditional A Levels and BTEC Level 3. With this, we are able to accommodate a wide range of options, from Photography and Theatre Studies to Medical Science and Computing.
You can expect your Sixth Form studies to be challenging, rewarding and fun. While you are at Cheney School you should feel able to take advantage of all the opportunities on offer, without worrying about the cost. There are many ways to receive financial support from Cheney School. Read our Bursary Information Leaflet to find out what you could be eligible for.
Many aspects of life in our Sixth Form are never recorded in any Performance Tables, but contribute so much to the personal development of students and to their ability to progress successfully into higher education or employment. All students participate in our Extended Curriculum and enrichment programme – this includes sport and certified volunteering through vInspired. Many Sixth Formers also play key roles in the school’s Student Leadership system. Many students do much, much more! We expect students to engage in meeting their own personal challenges, seeking to achieve what is within their extended grasp.
