BTEC Art and Design
What will I study?
This course looks at a wide range of art and design techniques and processes. You will produce work towards 2 compulsory units:
2D and 3D Visual Communication
- Contextual References in Art and Design
You then will produce work towards 2 specialist units selected from the following:
- Working With Graphic Design Briefs
- Working with Photography Briefs
- Working with Fashion Design Briefs
- Working with Textiles Briefs
- Working with 3D Design Briefs
- Working with Interactive Media
- Working with Visual Arts
- Working With 3D Design Crafts Briefs
What qualification will the course lead to?
You will achieve a BTEC First Extended Certificate equivalent to 2 GCSEs grades A*-C
How would it help me in the future?
This course is intended for students interested in working in the art and design industry and will enable you to start building the technical skills and knowledge needed for employment.
It will also enable you to go on to a more advanced qualification eg BTEC National.
How will my work be assessed?
Units will be assessed throughout the course. You will produce 4 units (2 per year). There are no exams, all assessment is through coursework.
What will be especially important for me to succeed on this course?
You need to have a keen interest and enjoy art and design. You should have a desire to learn new skills in art and design and want to visit galleries and find out about the many different jobs people do related to art and design. You will need to be enthusiastic, hard working and self motivated.

Will I be using any particular text books or website?
You will use specialist Art books which will be available in the art department. Your teacher will direct you to relevant websites throughout the course.
What is the examination board and title for this qualification?
The examination board is EDEXCEL; the title is BTEC First Extended Certificate in Art and Design.
