The Physical Education department aim to provide an enjoyable, broad and balanced programme within the guidelines of the national curriculum. The curriculum offers a range of experiences to meet the needs of the individual students. The structured and developmental programmes of study provide for progression, challenge and a sense of achievement.  In addition to core PE lessons the department offers the following courses: BTEC Sport Level 1 and 2 First Award and BTEC Sport Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport .

Extra curricular activities are important to the department with clubs running before school, during lunchtime and after school. The whole philosophy of the programme is based upon enjoyment, competition and participation. The PE department enters a wide variety of competitions and teams regularly compete and excel in a number of sports.

The Physical Education department runs a number of trips which in 2020 have included the National Indoor Rowing Championships in London, Kayaking and Rowing Competitions and regular county and national fixtures. Ultimately the department celebrates the success of students at their annual Sports Awards Evening.

As a department we value the importance of personal fitness and we are very fortunate to have a resistance-based fitness suite with fantastic gym equipment which contribute to the development of our students’ cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance.

NATIONAL CURRICULUM STATEMENT

Work within the Physical Education Department is designed to support, contribute to and complement the aims of Cheney School. Physical Education aims to provide an enjoyable, broad and balanced programme within the guidelines of the National Curriculum. The curriculum offers a range of experiences to meet the needs and interests of the individual students.

KEY STAGE 3

During Key Stage 3 students follow the National Curriculum for Physical Education. Activities include games (football, hockey, basketball, badminton, rugby, cricket, rounders) athletics and trampolining.

KEY STAGE 4

All students take part in PE lessons withthe focus on developing a range of activities so that students can sustain a lifelong commitment to sport. Lessons focus on health and fitness, developing life-skills, improving performance and leadership.

BTEC FIRST CERTIFICATE IN SPORT

This is a popular course offered as part of the options process. The course has several components —academic, practical work and observation/evaluation/coaching skills. A range of media are used to deliver the course, but staff endeavour to put as many of the concepts involved into a contextual situation.

KEY STAGE 5

The department delivers the level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Sport. Units covered include anatomy and physiology, work experience and fitness testing and training. This course is equivalent to one A Level.

EXTRA CURRICULAR PROVISION

The P.E. department aim to offer a wide range of activities including traditional and alternative sports. These include basketball, badminton, fitness, football, hockey, netball, rugby, cross country, rowing and kayaking. The department compete in County and National competitions in a wide range of sports.
