Book of the Week

Race to the Frozen North by Catherine Johnson

This tells the remarkable true story of a young boy in the early 20th century who, despite a depressingly tough start to life, travels the world and becomes the first man to reach the North Pole. However, on coming back home to the US, his achievements were largely ignored due to the colour of his skin.

This is a short, easy read, published by Barrington Stoke on cream dyslexia-friendly paper. However, it is an involving and engaging story that had me enthralled right to the very last word. I knew nothing of the Matthew Henson story and went away and researched more about him after having read the book (always the sign of a good book!).
