Due to Covid 19 restrictions there will be no work experience for our current Year 11 cohort. Year 11 work experience will hopefully commence from 2022.

What is it?

Year 11 students will spend one week with an employer to see what the working world is really like. This usually takes place during Term 2.

Why do work experience?

Work experience provides you with an excellent opportunity to increase your knowledge of enterprise and business as well as identifying and developing new skills. Your placement may help you to decide what you do/don’t want to do in the future: either way, it will help you understand what to expect when you enter employment.

What will Students gain?
  • Acquire and develop employ-ability skills
  • Learn about the working world
  • Business awareness
  • Gain confidence
  • An opportunity to meet new people and work with adults
  • Learn new skills
  • Your work experience may lead to a job opportunity
  • All students should receive a good reference to help with future employment (part-time or full-time)
Two ways in organising a placement

1. Webview

The OXLEP Database has lots of placements that students can select. In order to gain access to this, students will need to complete and return

- Student Consent Form

- Parent/Carer Consent Form

Once forms are returned back to school the students will be given their PIN number to access this website. Then they will be able select placements they are interested in.

2. Arrange your own placement.

This is a great way of using your contacts (family, wider family, friends etc) or you could try approaching employers yourself in order to secure a placement that you really want.

All students need to do, is get an employer to complete the Student Own Placement form (below), and return it back into school.

Points to bear in mind when choosing a placement:
  • Students are encouraged to find their own placement where possible – that way students will get the placement they want.
  • A placement does not have to be related to future career plans – the main aim is to develop confidence and to develop employ-ability skills whilst working.
  • Sort out your placement early - MAKE SURE YOU MEET THE DEADLINES.
  • Get help if you are stuck.
  • Students who try to change the placement they have been matched to could incur a £15 charge.
  • There are no lessons during the week of work experience: students who do not have a placement will do work experience in school.
Insurance and Health and Safety

Employers providing work experience placements must be approved by the Oxfordshire County Council and have insurance to cover young people under the age of 16. All the information on health and safety is set out in the Information for Parents leaflet which you can find below.

Work Experience Preparation

Students will have several assemblies about Work Experience to help with their preparation. Any questions can be directed to tutors, subject teachers, year team or Mr Davis for support.

Work Experience Diary

Students will receive their work experience diary prior to going out on work experience and are expected to complete it during the week.

The diary is for students to keep a record of what they are doing each day, and employer/parents/guardians and staff can make comments in the diary. The diary needs to be returned to Mr Davis on the first morning back at school.

Staff Visit

Cheney staff will try to visit all students during their work experience placement. If for any reason a visit can't happen, a call with the employer will take place to find out how the student is getting on.
