After school on Tuesday 27th February, the final of the oral presentations for the World War 2 Year 9 Research project took place. Seven year 9 students, who were voted by their respective history classes to go forward to the final, took part by reading their presentations from their World War II projects.
The standard was extremely high - all students spoke clearly and with confidence, and each of their respective presentations showed that a great deal of hard work and original research had been undertaken. Topics ranged from the role of women in World War 2 to the role of Alan Turing and the impact of the war in the far East on the British Empire. We were very impressed with the originality of the work for all students.
Congratulations to Ruby Rogers who was announced as the winner for her presentation entitled “How were minorities and native people treated during WWII?”. Ruby was able to include detail on the wartime experiences of different ethnicities whilst all the time referring to specific events. She won a £10 book token; all finalists were given a golden ticket to get to the front of the lunch queue for the rest of term! Congratulations also to the other finalists, who were Finlay, Amelia, Xinyan, Khadijah, Nora and Johnny; all gave brilliant presentations.
This event was the culmination of the Year 9 World War 2 history project in which students were encouraged to develop their skills in various aspects of research. It is part of a whole school long-term project to develop research skills, such as note-taking, effective use of the Internet and how to avoid plagiarism.
